Esri and MemSQL Use Open Transportation Data to Showcase the Power of Real-Time Geospatial Intelligence at Spark Summit East
Using data collected from 170 million NYC taxi rides, companies demonstrate how geolocation analysis and in-memory computing can enable easy consumption and visualization of massive spatial and temporal datasets
NEW YORK, NY and SAN FRANCISCO, CA - March 17, 2015 - (SPARK SUMMIT EAST, 2015) - Esri, the leading provider of geographic information systems (GIS) and MemSQL (www.memsql.com), the leader in real-time databases for transactions and analytics, today announced a showcase of real-time geospatial intelligence through open data compiled from 170 million real-world New York City taxi rides. The data set included GPS coordinates of pickups and dropoffs, as well as distance and travel times.
By leveraging MemSQL in-memory capabilities with new geospatial analysis and Apache Spark, Esri was able to create a geolocation heatmap that visualizes valuable data intelligence such as the average speed of a taxi ride, where the worst traffic jams occur in NYC and flow of traffic during workdays and weekends.
“The possibilities behind real-time geospatial intelligence are endless,” said Mansour Raad, big data advocate and senior software architect at Esri. “In this particular case, we were able to use open transportation data to derive meaningful, actionable intelligence quickly and in real-time. This kind of analysis can redefine the way urban developers resolve traffic congestion issues or help taxi businesses improve their efficiency with supply or demand of cabs depending on time of day and flow of traffic.”
